A:   Insulin cartridge already installed in the Pen / a disposable  insulin pen already being used / a vial once opened to fill the syringe - is called ‘In-use’ Insulin

2.  Is the storage condition for ‘Un-opened’ insulin and 'In-use'  insulin same?

A:   NO. While ‘Un-opened’ insulin needs to be stored at 2-8 C  (in refrigerator), once opened (In-use insulin), CANNOT be stored in the refrigerator. 'In-use' insulin has to be stored at  Room Temperature (18-25 C)#

3.   Can 'In-use' insulin be stored at normal room temperature in India?

A:   The “room temperature” for insulin storage refers to scientifically defined room temperature which is 18-25 C. In most of the cities / towns in India, the usual room temperature may more than 25 C

4.  Can 'In-use' insulin be refrigerated?

A:   NO. All manufacturers of Insulin clearly advise that 'In-use' insulin should NOT be refrigerated.

5.  What happens to 'In-use' Insulin when not stored at the recommended room temperature?

A:  Not storing Insulin at the recommended room temperature  may reduce the potency of Insulin and hence also reduce its ability to control blood glucose (resulting in high blood glucose levels).

6.   Is there a safe and effective way to store / carry 'In-use' insulin?

A:   YES. There are special carry-pouches called 'Insulin Cool Pouch'  available which can help in storing insulin at the recommended room temperature.
